Competition

Your Health Link National Photographic Competition and Exhibition is a program developed by the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) and is endorsed by the NSW Health Centre for Population Health, NSW Office of Preventive Health and the Healthy Kids Association.

The Competition’s focus is to increase health literacy through the exciting medium of photography, where community members are given a topic Healthy Life | Healthy You to actively participate in creating visual images that represent the subject matter.

The Competition has four categories – Primary and High School, Mobile, Open 18+ and is open to all Australian residents.

Aims and Objectives

The Competition is designed to achieve the following:

  • Increase health literacy in the Australian community through exploration and photographic depiction of competition subject matter Healthy Life | Healthy You

  • Promote and support the provision of healthy food environments at school through the Competition Schools Program

  • Support vital medical programs run by the MNCLHD.

Schools Program

In the past 25 years, Australia has seen increasing rates of overweight and obesity among children and young people. We now have a situation where one in four children is overweight or obese. This is a serious health concern as overweight and obesity carries a greater risk of immediate and long-term health problems.

The MNCLHD and our Competition Partners are working together to reduce childhood obesity through the Competition Schools Program which provides funding for healthy school canteen programs.  In partnership we support the following key initiatives:

  • Premier’s Priority: Tackling Childhood Obesity
  • The National Healthy School Canteen Guidelines  : which builds upon the activities of each state and territory government to encourage and promote healthy food through Australian school canteens. These government endorsed strategies are designed to give students a taste for healthy foods and to assist with providing healthier foods and drinks through the school canteen
  • Make Healthy Normal: is a key component of theNSW Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Strategy: Preventing overweight and obesity in New South Wales 2013-2018.
  • Go4Fun: is a FREE 10 week healthy lifestyle program for NSW kids aged 7-13 who are above a healthy weight. The program focuses on improving:
    • Eating habits
    • Fitness
    • Confidence

Go4Fun programs are led by trained qualified health professionals and take place after school, running parallel with school terms. Children and their families have fun and become fitter, healthier and happier.

Judging Process

The Competition is open to amateur and professional photographers with judging following a rigorous two-stage judging process.

The first stage will be conducted by the MNCLHD and the NSW Office of Preventive Health to ensure photographs meet the Competition theme/guidelines and that each photograph meets minimum technical quality requirements.

The second stage will be judged by a panel of expert photographers.

Each stage of the judging process will be ‘blind judged’, this means that our judges won’t know any information about the creator of the image (the photographer).

The judges’ decision in relation to any aspect of this Competition is final and binding on each person who enters this Competition (see Terms and Conditions).

National Photographic Exhibition

The Your Health Link National Photographic Exhibition will showcase our semi-finalist and finalist images, the exhibition is open to the public and will be held at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie on 18 November 2017, entry to the exhibition is free.
